Everyone has episodes of sadness. Sometimes there is a trigger or an obvious explanation.
Other times it is not that simple.
Maybe you don't trust yourself to know the difference between being "kinda down" and a more serious type of depression. When should you get help for someone who is showing signs of extreme sadness? Whether it is a child or an adult, sometimes it is hard to tell.
Clearly someone who is expressing self-harm, harm to others, who can't get out of bed, or those who ask for help.....should consult with a professional about treatment right away. A Psychologist, a Physician, your Rabbi, or your Minister can be helpful to determine the seriousness of signs of depression for you or for someone else you really care about.
One of the main symptoms any professional is going to assess first thing is whether or not the symptoms interfere with daily functioning. Does the person have more good days compared to bad days?
If you wonder if you are suffering from depression....
If you worry that your child is suffering from depression....
If you know someone you think is suffering from depression......

Depression can be easily treated.
I promise.
The problem is that people may not know that what they are feeling is related to depression and they don't get the help they need. Another big problem is the shame that tends to be associated with depression. It is up to all of us to see depression as real. It is treatable.
It is okay to ask for help.
