Therapy is difficult for most people. Think about it. It is about looking under the hood and exposing your emotional self. Tolerating the discomfort for growth. Feeling courage to feel competency. Giving yourself the gift of exposure to yourself, more than to someone else.
Turtles only progress when they stick their necks out.
I like to give assignments between appointments. The real work happens outside of my office. It's when you marinate and process what resonates with you from a therapy session - that real change really occurs. My Pinterest page includes a board with book titles that I recommend frequently. Go there.
One of my favorite authors is Brene Brown, Ph.D. Her books make a difference in people's lives. They change the way you think about yourself. They help you see that you are imperfect and that you are enough. Some days that is all that matters. Here is one of her quotes I love:
“Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” ― Brené Brown
I am imperfect. I am enough. So are you.
